The Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines are evidence-based guidelines that address the whole day. These guidelines are intended to help inform Canadians of all ages of the amount of physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep that is recommended to be healthy.

How are Canadians doing?
The ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Adults (2021) and Children and Youth (2024) represents a comprehensive summary of the literature and national-level surveys in the field of physical activity, recreation and sport. The Report Card assigns letter grades to many different indicators.
Take a moment to reflect on how well you are meeting the guidelines. Consider how well you think your relatives, friends, colleagues and neighbours measure up. I hope you, along with those you know, are doing better than most Canadians.
The Children and Youth report reveals a grade of D for sedentary behaviours and a grade of D+ for moderate-to-vigorous activity. This reflects an improvement over 2022 scores. However, the score for the combined 24-Hour Movement Guidelines has not improved and remains at a disappointing F. Only 4% of children and youth met the combined guidelines. Adherence to the combined guidelines was twice as low among girls (4%) as among boys (8%).

Come on, Canadians: Step up your game!
As Canadians, we need to be concerned about our future health. It is possible that the people who read the most about physical activity are the ones who are already surpassing the recommendations. But given the failing grades for both youth and adults, we all know people who are not meeting the guidelines.
